Santiago de Queretaro is a Federal State of the Mexican Republic, located in the center of the country. Its name comes from the Purepecha Querendaro, which means place of the ball game or also place of large rocks or boulders. Limits to the northeast with San Luis Potosi, Hidalgo to the east, to the south with Mexico City and Michoacan, and Guanajuato to the west.

The State is divided administratively into 18 municipalities which powers are exercised through a City Council, which is comprised by the Municipal President and city majors, who have quasi-legislative functions.
